Scouting
weekend for
2007 Rides
Story by Jim and Laurie Allshouse
Laurie and I met our cycling friends at Keystone State Park to scout out a route for either the OBS May Getaway or Fall Fling in 2007. Johnnie and Diana got there about mid afternoon on Friday. Moni rode her touring bike loaded with her tenting equipment and Jerry drove out after he got off work. We ate supper at the marina. We sat around and visited at dinner and back at camp. It had been a long time since we rode with Jerry and Moni. Saturday morning we got up at 7 am, had breakfast in camp and rode out about 9:00. We ended up in Jenks around 11:30, just in time for lunch. After lunch we rode back over a different route that Moni knew. It got us some small hills for training. As we were getting to the bottom of the dam, Jerry decided (after we teased him into it) to try climbing the side of the dam with his touring bike. We wanted to see what kind of gears and legs he had. He didn't get far and his front wheel didn't know it was supposed to STAY on the ground. Maybe it is a defective wheel. I think he could have made the top if the front wheel had stayed down. We all laughed with Jerry and then rode to camp for showers and to eat. Today's mileage was 59 miles.
At camp, I made our Chicken Divan in the Dutch oven. I used chicken because I couldn't find a cat. After supper we sat around and talked about all the problems of the world. I really feel like we solved some of them. Moni and Jerry had talked about going back home after we got back from riding or after supper, as she had some clothes packing to do before leaving Monday morning for a doctor’s appt. in Oklahoma City at 7:45 am. Then she was heading to Albuquerque to see their daughter. But they did stay and we all had breakfast together on Sunday morning at the marina before they left. Moni planned to drive back from Albuquerque straight to the OBS Tour de Trees weekend.
At 9:00am we started riding to
Sapulpa. This is going to be our Sunday morning breakfast ride so we need to
try out the route. We got the map info from Mike Schooling. He did a nice
job as it was a very pretty route with one GOOD long downhill. We found
the Sapulpa Family Diner to have lunch before our return to camp. On
the way back, we found a couple of hills (walls) we climbed. Today's
mileage was 45 miles.
The weekend campout was perfect with nice weather, good friends to ride with.
This is why Laurie and I ride our bicycles.
We thought we would use Keystone Lake as either the OBS May Getaway or Fall Fling rides in 2007.
